Art Irritates Nature
Because i could not build a fortress
it kindly built for me: around the garden
in my backyard to shield from bunny distress.
The curly white fence is more than style: warden
of all i survey. The plants must think it queer
to see me defend from attacks this way.
Neighbors shuffle quickly by: eyes agog with fear.
Patrolling in bunny warrior helm, i sense their dismay.
Protecting from vegetable thieves is not for the weak
of heart. With Sting streaming from the radio
I step wherever I want except where the Peke
squatted. As with every wall, the proof is in the mending,
especially if one's not sure which side one is defending.
